About Ning - Malaysian Restaurant & Cookery School

Situated right opposite York's historic Castle Tower, Ning is a new Malaysian restaurant and cookery school that opened in spring 2012 and is home to Europe's leading Malaysian chef, Norman Musa. A real ambassador for Malaysian food, Norman has published his own Malaysian cookery book, appeared on TV in both Malaysia and the UK and in 2010 worked as Race Chef for the prestigious Lotus Formula One motor racing team. Ning is styled on the trendy noodle bars that are a feature of modern Asian cities - it's a restaurant with a real chilled-out feel. The decor is chic and contemporary oriental with bold bespoke wallpaper and Malay batik prints. The food at Ning is fresh, halal and MSG-free with a range of menus to choose from. There is also an outside catering service and a cookery school but be sure to book well in advance. Ning has a sister venue in Manchester.

Opening Times: Closed Monday, Tuesday 5pm - 11pm, Wednesday 5pm - 11pm, Thursday 5pm - 11pm, Friday 5pm - 11pm, Saturday and Sunday 12pm - 2:30pm and 5pm - 11pm.

Establishment: Ning restaurant, cookery school and catering service was established in Manchester’s bustling Northern Quarter in late 2006. And from May 2012, we're proud to be in York! Led by Europe's leading Malaysian chef Norman Musa, we are passionate about Malaysian food and have been instrumental in setting a new culinary agenda. Style and simplicity, quality and value, individuality and hospitality - these are the values that stand Ning out from the crowd. Set within a simple but chic venue and served by friendly waiting staff, Ning's concept was originally inspired by the trendy noodle bars of Asian cities, with the relaxed and sociable ambience of continental European cafés. Our aim has always been to be authentic and stylish without pretension. We remain independent and our York branch is our 2nd Ning-branded restaurant, in a joint venture with the owner of the previous occupier, Jade Garden. In 2009 we were shortlisted for Manchester's Restaurant of the Year award, and have received numerous reviews and testimonials. In 2011 we took our cookery school on tour around the UK, and we featured at numerous food shows. 2012 is looking to be our busiest year yet, with ambitious plans to extend our reach and to continue to promote Malaysian food across UK & Ireland with our celebrity chef Norman Musa. We also act in a consultancy role for other newly forming Malaysian restaurants. Ning is a strong supporter and agent of the global Malaysia Kitchen campaign by MATRADE, and are members of the Malaysian Restaurants Association(UK) and the Federation of Small Businesses. We are a no-smoking, welcoming and inclusive venue. Although licensed to serve alcohol, all our food is Halal.
